WINNIPEG – Second place in the Northwest Division is safe for now for the Edmonton Oilers.

Brian Savage and Ryan Smyth scored roughly eight and a half minutes apart in the third period, leading Edmonton to a 3-1 win over Winnipeg Wednesday at the MTS Centre.

Chris Drury scored a power-play goal for the Jets, his 11th of the season, but Winnipeg saw a perfect opportunity to gain some ground on Northwest Division leader Colorado slip away.

“I feel we gave one away tonight,” said Winnipeg coach Jacques Leneveu. “We out-shot these guys, we out-hit them and I think we had the better opportunities.”

Winnipeg re-signs five to 2-year deals
 One More Year
Keith Tkachuk got the band back together for one more gig in 2011-12, as five of Winnipeg's core players restructured new two-year deals that will save $4.23 million.

WINNIPEGKeith Tkachuk isn’t quite ready to let Winnipeg go and it turns out he isn’t the only player to feel that way.

The Winnipeg Jets announced today that they have re-signed Tkachuk, Rod Brind’Amour, Tomas Holmstrom, Alexei Zhamnov and Johan Hedberg to new 2-year contracts that significantly alleviate the Jets’ cap crunch.

“We got together as a group and decided that this is where we wanted to be,” Tkachuk said. “We feel there is something great going on here and wanted to give it one more run after this season.”

All five players were scheduled to be UFAs this summer, but the restructuring of the contracts frees up $4.23 million and gives the team some breathing room to be a possible buyer at the trade deadline.

WINNIPEG – Just hours after Winnipeg announced the re-signing of five of its core players, two of them went out and paid immediate dividends on the Jets’ investment.

Keith Tkachuk scored twice, Alexei Zhamnov had a goal and two assists and Craig Anderson stopped 29 shots for his second shutout of the season as Winnipeg white-washed Colorado in a 6-0 win Monday.

“This was a fun game for us and the fans,” said Winnipeg coach Jacques Leneveu. “I can’t explain our recent domination over Colorado, but it sure is helping our chances to make the playoffs.”

The Jets lead the season series 5-0 over the Avs and have scored at least five goals in four of the games against their Northwest Division rival. Tonight, Colorado goaltender Marty Turco was chased after two periods for allowing four goals on 14 shots.
