Philadelphia, PA (AP) - Two big blasts from Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez power the Phillies to a victory over the Yankees in Game One of the World Series.
Roy Halladay didn't have his best stuff, but it was good enough for the win. The Phillies offense wasn't exactly lighting up C.C. Sabathia. But they scored enough to win. It was one of those kinds of nights for the Phils, who did just enough to pull out the 5-3 win.
"There are gonna be some nights like that," said Charlie Manuel. "And when that's the case, you gotta make sure you take advantage of the opportunities you get. Tonight, we did that, and we got the win."

Halladay came out of the gate struggling. He gave up a one out double to Robinson Cano. Then, Mark Teixeira drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Halladay was able to get Alex Rodriguez to strike out. But, Curtis Granderson came through in the clutch, driving a single to left field to bring home Cano with the first run of the game.
Halladay continued to work himself into trouble, walking Posada to load the bases. He went to a full count with Jeter before finally getting him to line out to first base.
In the second inning, it was much the same, as the Yankees threatened to put more runs on the board. Nick Swisher got a lead off single and was sacrificed to second by Sabathia. Halladay got ahead of Brett Gardner, but ended up hitting him to put runners at first and second with one out.
But, Cano popped up to shallow left field, and Teixeira grounded out, as Halladay escaped without any damage being done. Through four innings pitched, Halladay would throw 70 pitches and walk 3 batters. But again, he only gave up the one first inning run.

"You gotta give credit to Roy," said catcher Carlos Ruiz. "He really battled through it tonight. He didn't have his best stuff, but what separates great pitchers like Roy from good pitchers is that he can still work through it, get outs, and give up minimal runs."
He held the Yankees off long enough for the Phillies to come back and take the lead. In the third inning, it was looking like another 1-2-3 inning for Sabathia. But, Jimmy Rollins and Placido Polanco got back-to-back two out hits, bringing Chase Utley to the plate. And, as he has pretty much the entire postseason, Utley came through, smacking a three-run home run more than 400 feet into the right field stands.
"That was a big shot in the arm for us," said Halladay. "You could feel the momentum suddenly turn in our favor, and I know it certainly energized me."
New York did get a run back in the fifth inning. Cano led off with a single up the middle, then Teixeira doubled deep to the right-center gap, scoring Cano all the way from first to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Bronx Bombers were set up to tie it. But again, Halladay worked his magic, striking out Rodriguez, getting Granderson to ground out, and then finally grabbing a hard hit ball heading up the middle and throwing it to first for the final out.

The Yankees couldn't take advantage most of the night. They left 10 runners on base for the game and batted just 1-9 with runners in scoring position. However, the Phillies were able to come through in the clutch, and they did it again in the sixth. This time, it was Raul Ibanez who smacked a two-out, two-run home run to give the Fightins a 5-2 advantage. Philly scored all 5 of its runs with two outs.
After that, it was up to the bullpen to hold on, and as they have for the most part all season, the relievers were up to the challenge. The defense also stepped up, turning two double plays in the late innings, including a spectacular one started by Rollins in the 9th. With Gardner on first, Cano hit a grounder up the middle. Rollins dove to make the stop, then from the ground, threw the ball up to Utley, who relayed to Howard at first in time to get Cano.
Halladay picked up his fourth win in as many postseason starts. Brad Lidge shut the door in the 9th for his third save of the season. The two teams will go at it again Wednesday night. Cliff Lee will take the ball for Philadelphia, while Phil Hughes will start for the Yanks.
