Philadelphia, PA (AP) - He may or may not be ready for Opening Night in Boston, but the Flyers will have a new captain. The team announced via Twitter that they have named Chris Pronger as the 18th captain in club history.
Pronger, 36, was the clear-cut favorite to wear the ‘C’ after Mike Richards was traded on June 23. Ever since he arrived to the organization, Pronger has been the vocal leader in the locker room and took on the leadership duties regardless of whether he was wearing a letter on his jersey.
He was captain of the St. Louis Blues from 1997 to 2003 and was named captain of the Anaheim Ducks for the 2007-08 season.
The team announced that Danny Briere and Kimmo Timonen would be the team’s alternate captains.
Timonen had been wearing the ‘A’ for the Flyers for a couple seasons and was the captain of the Nashville Predators before joining the Flyers. Briere, who also has experience as a captain, will wear the ‘A’ regularly for the first time.
