ATLANTA, GA - This shortened series might just be the taste of things to come when they meet next week in a four game series in Cincinnati. Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann continued their tear on opposing pitchers as they combined for the only three home runs in the series.
Game 1: W, 5-3
Game 2: W, 6-0
In the first game of this series seen fantastic pitching throughout. It wasn't until the late innings did anyone really generate any offense. Reds SP Bronson Arroyo left the game in the second inning and was replaced by Sam LeCure, who pitched fantastically. A pinch hit RBI single by Matt Diaz gave the Braves the lead in the 7th only to see it erased quickly in the 8th when Brandon Phillips hit a solo shot off setup man Jonny Venters. Venters got hit with his second blown save of the year but offensive picked him up in the bottom half of the 8th thanks to a two run shot by Brian McCann. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the 9th to earn his 10th save.
Although the score doesn't make it appear to be a close game, it was. It was a battle between the two top winning pitchers in the NL. Reds Mat Latos and Braves Tommy Hanson, pitched great through 7 innings, giving up a combined three hits. However in the 8th the wheels came off the track for the Reds and Latos. He gave up a total of 8 hits and 6 runs before exiting out of the game. Hanson earned his NL league leading 6th win after throwing 8 innings of shutout ball. He struck out 11 and gave up just 3 hits.
The second game seen an early exit for Brandon Phillips who injured himself on a play. He was placed on the 15-Day DL and will not see action against the Braves next week. However Bronson Arroyo is expected to be ready to pitch on the 24th. Next will be a short two game series against the Miami Marlins (21-16). This will be the first meeting of the season between these two division rivals.
Game 1:
MIA: Mark Buehrle (0-2, 4.42 ERA)
ATL: Tim Hudson (3-2, 3.58 ERA)
Game 2:
MIA: Ricky Nolasco (3-1, 2.91 ERA)
ATL: Jair Jurrjens (1-2, 4.58 ERA)

Gearrin has thrived under his latest call-up with an ERA of 1.12, second on the team behind closer Craig Kimbrel. "It's going to be a tough decision on who to send down when everyone gets healthy." manager Fredi Gonzalez stated. July 29, 2012- After the recent string of injuries to Atlanta's staff, GM Frank Wren decided to add some more depth in the minors. He scoured the free agent pool and decided to take a chance on 32-year-old journeyman Bobby Cramer. Cramer last played for the Oakland Athletics in 2011. For his career he is 2-2 with a 2.53 ERA in just 9 games in two years. "He will be given a chance to earn a shot in the majors with our club." Wren stated. For now Cramer will join Gwinnett's starting rotation. July 15, 2012- 25-year-old SP Tommy Hanson has been cruising through batters this first half of the year. He leads the majors in most pitching categories, including the only pitcher to win 14 games. As it stand right now he is the top candidate to take home the NL Cy Young award. "It would be a great honor but I know there is a lot of baseball to come." Hanson stated. If the first half was any indication, you can count on him being in talks of the Cy Young at the end of the year. |
