ATLANTA, GA - The red hot Marlins came into town looking to continue their winning ways against division rival Braves. Miami was able to take the second game of the series in extra innings, thanks to an RBI single by Hanley Ramirez. This shortened series was one of the closest Atlanta has been involved with this year.
Game 1: W, 3-0
Game 2: L, 5-4
The first game was dominated by pitching from both ends. SP Mark Buehrle and Tim Hudson both tossed over 7 innings each allowing only one run combined. Braves LF Matt Diaz provided the offensive spark as he cashed in all three runs of the game. Craig Kimbrel came into the game and earned his 10th save of the year, while striking out 3. The biggest story from this game was Tim Hudson who left the game in the 8th inning only to find out later he has a UCL tear and will miss most of the season.
The second game seen four home runs, two by each team. Unlike last game, both starters in this game had troubles and neither were in the final outcome of the game. Recently recalled Jose Ceda earned the win, with Heath Bell picking up his 9th save of the year in the 10th inning.
The Braves and Marlins will next play on June 5-7 in the new Marlins Park. If this series was any indication of what the season series may turn out to be, it should be fun to watch throughout the year. Atlanta will now travel to face the Tampa Bay Rays (19-20), a team they aren't familiar with. Interleague is about to start and Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has to figure out his AL style lineup for this weekend series.
Game 1:
TB: Jeff Niemann (0-3, 6.82 ERA)
ATL: Brandon Beachy (5-1, 1.46 ERA)
Game 2:
TB: David Price (4-2, 2.28 ERA)
ATL: Mike Minor (3-3, 2.62 ERA)
Game 3:
TB: James Shields (5-3, 5.36 ERA)
ATL: Tommy Hanson (6-2, 1.77 ERA)

August 12, 2012- This past series relief pitcher Cory Gearrin tossed 4.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 7 strikeouts, including his 5th win of the year in game 2 against the Mets. 25-year-old Gearrin was recalled back in May after Kris Medlen was added to the starting rotation due to injuries. Gearrin has thrived under his latest call-up with an ERA of 1.12, second on the team behind closer Craig Kimbrel. "It's going to be a tough decision on who to send down when everyone gets healthy." manager Fredi Gonzalez stated. July 29, 2012- After the recent string of injuries to Atlanta's staff, GM Frank Wren decided to add some more depth in the minors. He scoured the free agent pool and decided to take a chance on 32-year-old journeyman Bobby Cramer. Cramer last played for the Oakland Athletics in 2011. For his career he is 2-2 with a 2.53 ERA in just 9 games in two years. "He will be given a chance to earn a shot in the majors with our club." Wren stated. For now Cramer will join Gwinnett's starting rotation. July 15, 2012- 25-year-old SP Tommy Hanson has been cruising through batters this first half of the year. He leads the majors in most pitching categories, including the only pitcher to win 14 games. As it stand right now he is the top candidate to take home the NL Cy Young award. "It would be a great honor but I know there is a lot of baseball to come." Hanson stated. If the first half was any indication, you can count on him being in talks of the Cy Young at the end of the year. |
