Kimbrel earns three saves against O's

ATLANTA, GA - Reigning NL Rookie of the Year Craig Kimbrel, currently leads the league in saves with 23. He earned save numbers 21-23 in this series sweep of the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend. As well as his high save total, he leads the Braves with a 0.33 ERA.

Game 1: W, 6-3

Game 2: W, 8-5

Game 3: W, 3-0

The number one and two hitters in Atlanta's lineup played an important role in game one of this series. Martin Prado and Jason Heyward combined for 4 hits, 4 hit, 4 runs and 5 RBIs. Heyward had 2 home runs against SP Armando Galarraga. "I was seeing the ball well against Armando [Galarraga], tough break." Jason stated after the game.

After rebounding strongly against the Blue Jays, SP Mike Minor was back to his old form prior to that game. Minor was able to get the win thanks to strong run support by his teammates. Orioles SP Tommy Hunter was recently recalled from AAA Norfolk and made his 2012 debut. It wasn't a strong outing as he got tagged for 7 runs, 6 earned in just 3 innings of work before he got the hook. 4 of his 8 hits were of the long-ball variety, as Heyward and Prado continued their dominance against Baltimore pitching.

Braves SP Tommy Hanson cruised yet again, going 8 scoreless innings, while striking out a season-high 13 batters. He picked up his major league leading 11th win of the year and is poised to become the SP for the NL in the All-Star game next month. Jack Wilson who was playing 2B for the injured Dan Uggla found himself injured and Eric Hinske came in late for him to play left field as Prado shifted to second.

Jason Heyward and Martin Prado combined for 6 home runs (3 each) in that series and are tearing up opposing pitchers. "It's always nice when we have such production coming from our number 1 and 2 holes. Jason [Heyward] might have put his early season struggles behind him." Manager Fredi Gonzalez stated. Next on tap is the second and final series against the New York Yankees (34-32). This time on the road as New York will look to defeat the Braves this time around.

Game 1:

NYY: Michael Pineda (5-5, 5.12 ERA)

ATL: Kris Medlen (3-1, 2.80 ERA)

Game 2:

NYY: Ivan Nova (2-2, 4.55 ERA)

ATL: Jair Jurrjens (3-3, 3.15 ERA)

Game 3:

NYY: Billy Morrison (0-1, 10.80 ERA)

ATL: Brandon Beachy (9-2, 2.69 ERA)

- This past series relief pitcher Cory Gearrin tossed 4.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 7 strikeouts, including his 5th win of the year in game 2 against the Mets.

25-year-old Gearrin was recalled back in May after Kris Medlen was added to the starting rotation due to injuries. Gearrin has thrived under his latest call-up with an ERA of 1.12, second on the team behind closer Craig Kimbrel. "It's going to be a tough decision on who to send down when everyone gets healthy." manager Fredi Gonzalez stated.

- After the recent string of injuries to Atlanta's staff, GM Frank Wren decided to add some more depth in the minors. He scoured the free agent pool and decided to take a chance on 32-year-old journeyman Bobby Cramer.

Cramer last played for the Oakland Athletics in 2011. For his career he is 2-2 with a 2.53 ERA in just 9 games in two years. "He will be given a chance to earn a shot in the majors with our club." Wren stated. For now Cramer will join Gwinnett's starting rotation.

- 25-year-old SP Tommy Hanson has been cruising through batters this first half of the year. He leads the majors in most pitching categories, including the only pitcher to win 14 games.

As it stand right now he is the top candidate to take home the NL Cy Young award. "It would be a great honor but I know there is a lot of baseball to come." Hanson stated. If the first half was any indication, you can count on him being in talks of the Cy Young at the end of the year.
