Stifled; D-Backs pitching give Atlanta the series loss

ATLANTA, GA - Atlanta came into this game on a five-game winning streak but all of it came to an end in the second game of the series. Arizona managed to beat the Braves in another series and took the season series 5-2.

Game 1: W, 3-1

Game 2: L, 3-0

Game 3: L, 3-1

Braves SP Jair Jurrjens pitched a fantastic game and was just two outs away from a complete game shutout. The only run driven in was by pinch hitter Cole Gillespie who hit a sac fly to center scoring Aaron Hill. Closer Craig Kimbrel came in and earned his league leading 27th save.

This second game seen Atlanta shutout for only the second time this year. D-Backs SP Trevor Cahill pitched a fantastic game, going the distance on just 3 hits and striking out 5 in his 6th win of the year. SP Brandon Beachy pitched well but was the tough luck loser in this one. The game winning run was driven in by Cahill, helping his own cause.

The rubber match was a lot like the second game but with a few more hits. The Braves were able to score this time around by RF Matt Diaz. LF Jason Kubel hit his second straight home run against the Braves, another two-run shot to right center. RF Gerardo Parra drove in the insurance run in the 7th, to give Joe Saunders his 4th win of the year.

For whatever reason the Braves struggled this year against the NL West leading Diamondbacks. Jason Kubel was a big part of that scoring 4 of the 7 runs in this series finale. Atlanta will now host a weekend series against the basement dwelling Washington Nationals.

- This past series relief pitcher Cory Gearrin tossed 4.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 7 strikeouts, including his 5th win of the year in game 2 against the Mets.

25-year-old Gearrin was recalled back in May after Kris Medlen was added to the starting rotation due to injuries. Gearrin has thrived under his latest call-up with an ERA of 1.12, second on the team behind closer Craig Kimbrel. "It's going to be a tough decision on who to send down when everyone gets healthy." manager Fredi Gonzalez stated.

- After the recent string of injuries to Atlanta's staff, GM Frank Wren decided to add some more depth in the minors. He scoured the free agent pool and decided to take a chance on 32-year-old journeyman Bobby Cramer.

Cramer last played for the Oakland Athletics in 2011. For his career he is 2-2 with a 2.53 ERA in just 9 games in two years. "He will be given a chance to earn a shot in the majors with our club." Wren stated. For now Cramer will join Gwinnett's starting rotation.

- 25-year-old SP Tommy Hanson has been cruising through batters this first half of the year. He leads the majors in most pitching categories, including the only pitcher to win 14 games.

As it stand right now he is the top candidate to take home the NL Cy Young award. "It would be a great honor but I know there is a lot of baseball to come." Hanson stated. If the first half was any indication, you can count on him being in talks of the Cy Young at the end of the year.
