College Park, Maryland: The 2009 season for the Maryland Terrapins wasn't considered a disappointment since they were picked to finish in the bottom part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland finished the season with a 2-10 overall record while going just 1-7 in conference play.
So let the tenth season of the Ralph Friedgen era begin and the Terrapin faithful are hoping for a bounce back year. Since being named head coach at the University of Maryland, Ralph is 66-46 but after winning ten games three straight season to start his tenure the Terps haven't won ten games in a season since 2003.
Winning just two games last season were the lowest in the Friedgen era the wins were won by a combined six points a three point win over James Madison in overtime and a three point win over Clemson. While Maryland lost half of their games by ten points or more.
That's why many wonder will this be the last go around for coach Friedgen as his offensive coordinator James Franklin who is entering his eighth season with the Terps was named “Head Coach” in waiting.
The Maryland coaching staff blame the Terps struggle in 2009 to their poor starts. The Terps were outscored last season in the first quarter 116 to 54. They also turned the ball over 24 times while only creating 18 turnovers. The Terrapins inexperienced offensive line also gave up 36 sacks in twelve games.
Even with all the doom and gloom that surrounds the Maryland football team there is hope for the future that they can rebound and possibly make a bowl game with an easier schedule and all the experienced gain last year.
Speaking of the 2010 upcoming schedule it is more manageable with out of conference games against Navy, Morgan State, West Virginia and Florida International. They however do play their more tougher games on the road against West Virginia, Clemson and Miami.
Many throughout the college football landscape predict the Terps to go 7-5 this season.
Maryland will be relying on key offensive starters Da’Rel Scott(running back), Jamarr Robinson(quarterback), and Torrey Smith(wide receiver).
The Terps defense will be led by Alex Wujciak(linebacker), Cameron Chism(cornerback) and Adrian Moten(linebacker).
Both Torrey Smith and Alex Wujciak were both named to the pre-season All-Atlantic Coast Conference team.
