Kalamazoo-When the season started, no one expected the former national champions to be sitting at a 0-2 record coming back home to face a #6 Connecticut Huskies squad that has looked promising. But the Broncos showed why they are the National Champs as they stomped on the Huskies 59-31. "The first half way real shaky for our defense after giving up 28 points, but they responded well and dominated in the 2nd half," said Head coach Dylan Hinton. The Broncos offense looked in sync as Chance Irons threw for 377 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, while the Broncos relied on Senior running back Antoni Scriven who rushed 12 times for 142 yards, with a touchdown. "The guy has been unbelieveable the past two weeks and has really helped us on offense," said Junior quarterback Chance Irons.
With the win the Broncos enter the top 25, claiming the #22 spot. But will face the challenge of trying to go uphill in a conference that truly only fares newly recruited Norte Dame as a challenge as well as Northern Illinois. "Right now we need to shift our focus to winning the conference and clinch a 3rd consecutive title," said Hinton.
Kalamazoo-After a historical season for the Western Michigan Broncos, where they watched one of their own become a heisman hopeful, only to watch running back Tevin Drake finish 2nd in the heisman voting after rushing for over 2,000 yards. THey watched their beloved Broncos advance all the way to the BCS Title game for the first time in school history and take apart piece by piece a TCU team that many thought could do just the same to the Broncos. After all this, the Broncos though still do not get any respect as the 2014 top 25 rankings have come out and the Broncos are no where to be seen. "Its apart of college football and to be honest it gives our guys more of a burn in our bellys," said Head Coach Dylan Hinton.
The Broncos lost Tevin Drake, but now will reley heavily on the arm of Junior Chance Irons, who last season threw for 3,206 yards and 28 touchdowns with 23 interceptions. "This year, I just focused mostly on my decision making and being able to get rid of the ball when nothing is happening," said Irons. The Bronco offense will also look to senior wide reciever Kendrick Roberts for help in the passing game, while also hoping that freshman Dustin Jenkins can survive the first year jitters at tight end.
On the Defensive side of the ball, the Broncos lost Terrence Boles, who ended his season with 8.5 sacks and as an All-American. They must also fill the shoes of middle linebacker, Robert Brackman, another All-American. "Both of those guys are going to be hard to fill, but we know that we have a great system in place and guys that are ready to step up," said Hinton. This defense man make or break this Broncos team this season as the front 7 look like they may struggle, while the secondary has vastly improved from last year.
Also adding to the 2014 season for the Broncos is the new arrival of Norte Dame to the MAC and #14 Troy. "Both of those teams are real good and very competitive. Its great for the MAC because it is being schools with reconigion to our conference," said Hinton. The Broncos will face the Fighting Irish this year, but not Troy.
Kalamazoo- Coming into the game, the Western Michigan Broncos(2-1) looked like they were going to dominate the very limited talented Kent State Golden Flashes(0-3). "Our team knew that we had to dominate these guys right away, even though they dont have the victorys they still are a dangerous team when they get hot," said head coach Dylan Hinton. The Broncos relied on Sophimore quarterback Chance Irons, who threw for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns that helped give the Broncos a more stable lead.
The Broncos also looked to Heisman hopeful Tevin Drake, who rushed 14 times for 131 yards and punched a touchdown in from 5 yards out. "Tevin(Drake) has become such a huge part of what were doing here and has developed into such a great player, that it blows my mind," said offensive coordinator Daniel Rodriguez. The Broncos now sit at #21 in the nation and look to beat a #13 LSU team that is looking to show the Broncos flaws.
