Pittsburgh, PA - For Chris Carpenter, his early season numbers are the least of his worries... he just wants to be on the mound every fifth day. And after the Cardinals 3-0 victory Tuesday night, he appears well on his way.

Carpenter battled the cold temperatures and a tight strike zone all evening but showed flashes of his old form by recording just one out through the air. He recorded eight strikeouts and sat down five of the final six via strikeouts, allowed just two base hits and walked a pair in five innings. Manager Tony La Russa wanted to pull him while he was ahead, as Carpenter had already thrown 81 pitches on the night. The 33-year old said he could have went one more but did not disagree with La Russa.
