(Charlotte, NC) -- The 2010 World Cup in South Africa this summer has the theme of "one goal changes everything." Well, in today's Buffalo Bills - Carolina Panthers tilt, the NFL can say it's theme is "one play changes everything." The Bills offense, anemic for just about the whole game, found success on one play, and it gave them the necessary points for a victory on the road against Carolina.
"Yeah, the offense didn't execute as well as we would like them to, but what matters is that they executed enough for the win," exclaimed coach Dick Jauron. "And let's not take away anything from the defense. They didn't allow a touchdown all day and really held [Steve] Smith and [D'Angelo] Williams in check. Major credit for this win goes to them."
The defense was excellent, but they also got a little help early. After the Bills offense was intercepted on it's opening drive, the Panthers marched down the field and deep into Buffalo territory before being stopped on a 3rd down and forced into a field goal situation. Unfortunately for the home fans, normally reliable John Kasay hit the left upright on a relatively short 30 yard field goal, and the game remained at 0-0.
Kasay redeemed himself in the 2nd quarter, hitting 3 field goals in the frame, from 38, 45, and 43 yards in that order. The Bills could only muster a 48 yard field goal from Rian Lindell in the quarter and found themselves down 9-3 at the half.
The offensive woes continued in the 2nd half, as the Bills couldn't even get into field goal territory. And mental mistakes didn't help either, as the Bills were flagged for 7 penalties totaling 90 yards and 6 drops from the pass catchers (if you could call them that today). But the defense was up to the task, and punter Brian Moorman was stellar at pinning the Panthers deep in their own end to give the Bills a fighting chance the whole game.
"If you look at the stats, you wouldn't believe we won this game," Jauron continued on in his postgame addressing of the media. "But the little things we did today really became big. Not to toot my own horn here, but our coaching staff really did well in preparing our team this week. Situations came up, and our guys on the sidelines made the right calls. Very proud of my partners today."
Indeed, the Bills didn't get desperate, instead opting to stick to the plan and hope for a breakthrough from the offense. With around 5 minutes remaining in the game, the offense was stopped on a 3rd down and stared at a 4th and 2 from the Carolina 45 yard line. Jauron called on the punt team instead of going for it and possibly picking up a first down, but that wasn't guaranteed and either was the future success of the drive. Moorman's punts were on point all day and again he angled one within the 20 yard line.
The defense forced a punt from the Panthers, and the offense would get another chance to make something happen. Just when it seemed like they were destined to fail yet again facing a 3rd and 15 from their own 24, fortune smiled upon the oft-maligned Buffalo Bills. Quarterback Trent Edwards saw a mismatch; defensive end/linebacker Tyler Brayton manning up on wideout Josh Reed while the nickelback came in on a corner blitz. Edwards stood in and took a pounding, but got the ball off in time to Reed, who caught it over his shoulder and easily outran the less athletic Brayton for a game changing, or should we say game saving, 76 yard touchdown.
The defense needed one more stop and got it, and Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson teamed up to run out the clock and seal the 10-9 win over the Panthers.
QUICK HITS
Offense was not on tap today, and the mostly dreadful numbers from both teams prove that. Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme was 13 of 25 for 165 yards with no TD's or INT's, and only tight end Jeff King had a receiving line of mention: 3 catches for 78 yards. D'Angelo Williams rushed 26 times for 79 yards while Jonathan Stewart carried the ball 7 times for 44 yards. Steve Smith had only 1 catch for 8 yards and was visually frustrated at his lack of looks. Defensively for Carolina, Charles Godfrey had a tackle and an interception, linebacker Thomas Davis collected 6 tackles and a sack, and Tyler Brayton, despite being burned for the game winning touchdown, recorded 3 tackles and a sack. For the Bills, Trent Edwards was putrid, going 13 of 28 for 195 yards with a TD and an INT. Marshawn Lynch turned it up a notch late, and ended with 60 yards on 13 carries. Fred Jackson carried 10 times for 32 yards. Josh Reed was the only receiver who had a good game, catching 4 passes for 107 yards and the winning score. Defensive ends Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel teamed up for 9 tackles and 3 sacks (2 for Kelsay) between the two of them to lead the defense in an impressive performance.
Next week, the Bills (3-4) look to even their record as they host the Houston Texans (3-4), who are looking to do the same. But they'll be without their starting left tackle (Duane Brown, out for the season), left guard (out for 9 weeks), and right tackle (Eric Winston, out for the season). Despite all of this, wide receiver Andre Johnson leads the league in catches (53) and touchdowns (10) and is second in yards (772).
